What NFPA 10 is
NFPA 10 is the NFPA standard for portable fire extinguishers. The NFPA catalog lists the 2026 edition as current. Fire Inspection Log is not part of NFPA, and this guide only uses the catalog title plus public OSHA language where it helps you keep a practical log. If you are building a simple reminder workflow, see how often to inspect and the glossary for plain terms.
Why this page does not quote it
This guide avoids quoting NFPA 10 because the standard text is not reproduced here. That keeps the page short and keeps the focus on what you can record in a reminder log. For Fire Inspection Log, that means the plan is to track the extinguisher list, a monthly reminder, a log entry with a date and a note, the last annual maintenance date, and emergency light test dates. You can see the product direction on the features page.
The public OSHA intervals you can put in a log
Where OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157 applies, portable fire extinguishers get a monthly visual inspection. The same section calls for an annual maintenance check, and stored pressure extinguishers do not need an internal examination under that paragraph. OSHA also says the employer records the annual maintenance date and keeps that record for one year after the last entry, or for the life of the shell, whichever is less. For a deeper walkthrough, use OSHA extinguisher inspection.
OSHA also covers longer cycle service items. Stored pressure dry chemical extinguishers that require a 12 year hydrostatic test are emptied and maintained every 6 years, and the 6 year count starts again when the unit is recharged or hydrostatically tested. OSHA Table L-1 sets hydrostatic test intervals by extinguisher type, with examples including 5 years for carbon dioxide and stored pressure water, and 12 years for stored pressure dry chemical with mild steel, brazed brass, or aluminum shells. Testing is done by trained people with suitable equipment, and the record includes the date, the signature of the person who tested it, and an identifier.
NFPA 25 is not this page
NFPA 25 is a separate standard for water-based fire protection systems, so it is not the source for this extinguisher page. This guide is about portable fire extinguisher reminders, not sprinkler or pump checklists. If you need a simple place to keep dates and notes for extinguisher and light checks, Fire Inspection Log is built for that workflow without an account in v1.
This is a reminder log, not an inspection and not code compliance. Not a substitute for a licensed fire protection inspection. Rules differ by workplace and by the fire code your local authority uses. Fire Inspection Log is not part of OSHA, NFPA, or any fire marshal office.
